The great Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida was born in Valencia, 27 February 1863 to a merchant and his wife, Concepción Bastida Joaquin n. In Band age two years, Sorolla and his younger sister Shell have lost parents to cholera. His maternal uncle and aunt who raised him. Sorolla showed talent for painting at an early age and at age 15, joined the Academy of San Carlos de Valencia. At 18, he went to Madrid and tried to copy Master paintings from the Prado Museum. The works of Diego Velazquez (1599-1660) and the concept of luminism fascinated the artist. After completing his service military, he continued his art studies in F. Pradilla, then director of the Spanish Academy in Rome.

Joaquín Sorolla returned in his hometown of Valencia in 1888 and married Clotilde García del Castillo, the daughter of an owner of a study for which he worked in 1879. They had a son (1892) Joaquin and his two daughters Maria (1890) and Elena (1895). In 1990 the family returned to Madrid Bastida. Sorolla work revolved around themes realistic historical, social, oriental mythology. The first time I tasted success when he received a gold medal exposure Nacional de Madrid 'Another Margarita "his painting (1892). The painting also won first prize at the International Exhibition Chicago. In 1894, he received recognition at the Paris Salon for his painting The "Back to fishing. His masterpiece "Sad Inheritance" (1899) won Grand Prix and won medals at the Universal Exhibition of Paris Declaration and the National Exhibition in Madrid.

In 1900, Sorolla was considered a great artist and was nominated as Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur. Later, he even became an honorary member Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, Lisbon and Valencia. In 1905 he bought land in the Paseo del Obelisco (now known as the Paseo del General Martínez Campos) where he built his house. In 1906, he had his first solo exhibition Galerie Georges Petit (Paris) which has created about 500 paintings. A series exhibitions of his works, then followed in 1907 in Berlin, London in 1908, and New York, Chicago and St. Louis in 1909. One of the great commission Sorolla worked on a series of large paintings on wood Hispanic Society of America called "Provinces of Spain (1911-1919) representing the Spanish Steps, people and cultures.

Joaquín Sorolla was a dynamic internationally renowned artist. His paintings were works of art created with radiant colors and vigorous brush dynamics. He was also a talented portraitist. His portraits are important ones of King Alfonso XIII of Spain (1907), Maria La Granja (1907), and President William Howard Taft (1909). Sorolla suffered a stroke in 1920 that left him paralyzed for three years. It died in Madrid August 10, 1923. His house in Madrid General Martínez Campos was later converted into a museum.
