If you are in the market for a golf set, either buying it new from a sports equipment supplier or online retailer, or buying it used but in good condition from someone who has no more need, there are a few things you should look for.
To make sure you get a golf set that meets your needs, determine how many clubs you want. If you're new to the sport, you probably won't know the minute differences between certain irons and woods, so a set with fewer clubs (e.g. 14) is actually better for you. If you are more advanced, a 16-club set may be more of what you are looking for. All should include a driver and at least two wedges. Putters are often sold separately.
If you're starting out with no equipment, look for a golf set that includes a bag and maybe even some balls and tees. Buying things together and save money.
When you set out to buy a golf set, you need to know what a good set contains to make sure you are getting the clubs you need to play the game well, relative to the skill level you are at.
Most golf club sets will contain 14-16 clubs, which includes:
- Irons 2-7 (6 clubs)
- Woods 3, 5, and 7 (3 clubs)
- A driver (1 club)
- A pitching wedge and sand wedge (2 clubs)
- A hybrid
- A putter
This is, of course, a considerable number of clubs, and if you are new to the game, you may not need this many. In fact, having this many to choose from may make the game more complicated than you are ready for, so choosing a set with a smaller selection (but still good variety) may be helpful, as well as more affordable, if you are new.
Buying golf clubs is exciting, but you want to make sure you do it right. Deciding between buying a golf set that already includes a matched combination of clubs (often with a bag included) is different from buying individual clubs, and there are advantages and disadvantages to each.
Buying in a set:
- generally costs less per club (+)
- ensures clubs feel similar for consistent playing (+)
- doesn't give you as much control (-)
Buying clubs separately:
- means you can choose how many clubs to get (+)
- lets you pick individual clubs based on feel (+)
- often costs more per club (-)
You can spend anywhere from $75 to $1,500 on a golf set, largely depending on the quality of materials and construction you are looking for, as well as brand name and number of clubs. For most people, the $400-$500 range works quite well.
