Now that graphite shafts have been on the market for a while people are asking what's the big deal and what's the difference versus steel? Do I need the graphite shafts for golf club instead of the traditional steel?
First and foremost let's discuss weight. Graphite weighs less then steel for starters. The biggest factor that comes into play with graphite and why they are so popular amount golfers is their incredible stiffness. Graphite is also very durable and can provide that extra whip for those with high speed swings. When talking weight of the golf club the lighter the weight the increased capability to swing the golf club at faster speeds. Faster swing speeds translate into the golf ball flying much farther.
A typical weight of a golf driver with a steel shaft is approximately 13 oz when you put together an average sized head with grip. Now in contrast when you take the weight of the golf driver with a graphite shaft you're looking at around 11 oz. which is 2 oz lighter which again translates into approximately four mph increase in swing speed which gives you almost twelve more yards in increased distance and that will keep you smiling all the way to the golf green.
Now with all this talk about graphite shafts keep in mind they are not for everyone. Most can get away with using graphite shafts and will see the benefits. Others that fall into the category of either lack in swing power or have a very fast paced swing will need a little heavier club for more control and guidance for their golf swing.
Some like myself prefer the feel of steel shaft due to the way vibrations are carried throughout the golf club. Steel provides a more sharp feel up to the grip of the club where as graphite is a little more tuned down feel.
If you are struggling with the lack of distance that your getting off the tee box or in the fairway then consider trying a graphite golf shaft. If you have a fast swing and need a little more control then stick to the steel shaft, this will keep your swing tempo under control and will be more satisfied with the outcome of your ball strike. Analyze your current golf swing and figure out if graphite or steel golf shafts are going to work best for you.
