For triathletes, the transition between the bike and run can be brutal in the lower back when you move from sitting bent forward respect to a vertical position during walking. Improving mobility in backward bending, or extending the lumbar spine may be the key to less time returning to an upright posture after cycling.
L5 is usually in a slight downward tilt on sacrum. This relationship allows a huge amount of shock absorption and body weight resulting from the trunk through this segment in the pelvis and lower limbs. Gravity tends to want to take this segment later. Sitting in the car, at work or on a bike together more aggressive, promotes a flexed position in front of L5 on the sacrum joint and myofascial restrictions. Triathletes often struggle to get out of this position of flexion after a long bike ride.
